Big-time talent, big-ticket item

Three days of peace, love and mud don't come cheap anymore.
But considering the music lineup at Woodstock '99, those $150
tickets -- which go on sale Sunday -- might not be such a bad
deal. The festival, scheduled for July 23-25, is expected to draw
a quarter-million fans to an old Air Force base in Rome, N.Y.,
which is closer to Canada than it is to the 1969 or 1994 event
locales.
The hot talent list includes such blockbusters as Metallica, Jewel,
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Korn, Aerosmith and DMX. With an
eclecticism faithful to both the Woodstock ethic and the 1999
musical climate, artists range from the rap-reggae of Wyclef
Jean to the alt-rock of Alanis Morissette.
Organizers say Detroit was among the top five originating
markets for the 300,000-plus fans at Woodstock '94.
Tickets include admission and camping and go on sale at 9 a.m.
Sunday only through Ticketmaster's Woodstock hot line, at
1-212-397-7474.
Or, for $899, you can grab a package out of Detroit that
includes airfare, a room at the Radisson in Syracuse,
transportation to and from the fest and admission. Those
packages are already on sale; call 1-800-832-4242. Find more
info at www.woodstock.com
And if you're wondering about that notorious Woodstock mud,
well, the Farmer's Almanac is calling for dry weather that
weekend -- until Sunday, when thunderstorms are predicted.
